2024 has already been a stellar year for new fantasy book releases – but we’re not done yet! In fact, over the course of the next 12 months, some of the most anticipated fantasy books will be hitting the shelves – some of these books fans have been waiting for for years!

As for myself, I’ve compiled a list of the top seven that I am most excited about. You can bet I have given my credit card a workout with all the preorders!

If you need to top off your TBR with some fresh fantasy, you might want to do the same.

7. Wisteria by Adalyn Grace – Aug 20, 2024

Wisteria is book three in the Belladonna trilogy by Adalyn Grace. You will be hard-pressed to find a young adult series with the same gothic romantasy vibes as this one. Spoiler-alert, the love interest is Death himself.

Of course, you want to make sure you read Belladonna and Foxglove before this one! Best of all, the wait is the shortest of any on this list – the book comes out on August 20, 2024.

6. Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros – Jan 21, 2025

Pre-Order Now

I’m going to be honest; The Empyrean series is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It’s not the most compelling writing you’ll ever read, but it’s a satisfying romantasy that’s perfect for the beach or summer vacation.

Plus, it features a large grumpy dragon, so it’s hard to say no.

It also has a gorgeous cover! This third installment comes out on January 21, 2025 and the first print edition comes with gorgeous sprayed edges.

5. The Fury of the Gods by John Gwynn – Oct 22, 2024

The Fury of the Gods is book three in the Bloodsworn Saga by John Gywnne, which is a series must-read series for any dragon-lover. This final installment in the series features Norse-inspired mythology and epic-scale high fantasy. If you like viking-type stories with unforgettable characters and a complex female lead, you will definitely love this series.

And if you pre-order it, you still have time to get caught up on the first two books before it’s release in October!

4. The Songbird & The Heart of Stone – Carissa Broadbent – Nov 19, 2024

One of my favorite romantic fantasies of all time is The Serpent and the Wings of Night, which is basically a Hunger Games meets vampires, enemies to lovers romance. Although that story arc is complete, there is a third book being released in the same world featuring different characters called The Songbird & The Heart of Stone.

This one is going straight to the top of my TBR pile as soon as it comes out in November because let me tell you, Ms. Broadbent knows how to right a compelling fantasy romance!

3. The Strength of the Few by James Islington – TBD 2025

I have no cover and no pre-order button for you. I don’t even have a release date. But I’m so excited for this second installment to James Islington’s Hierarchy series that I had to write about it. When the pre-order does become available, I’ll update this post!

As of June 2024, the book was submitted for editing according to Islington’s website, and he expects it will be released sometime in 2025.

This is the follow-up book to The Will of the Many, which is one of the best high fantasies I’ve read this year. Inspired by the Roman Empire and featuring a unique magic system where a network of people’s “will” or life force power the leaders of the world. It’s one of those stories where you never know who to trust and the plot twist at the end of the first book has left me dying for this release!

2. Katabasis by R.F. Kuang – Aug 26 2025

R.F. Kuang is one of my “insta-buy” authors; if she writes it, I’m reading it. Babel, in particular, absolutely floored me and so I’m especially excited to read this new fantasy about two academic rivals who must rescue their advisor from the underworld.

It’s also a love story, which will be interesting since romance has always been notably absent from Kuang’s other works – but I am here for it!

I already have this baby on pre-order and August 2025 can’t come soon enough!

1. Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson – Dec 6, 2024

This is by far and away my most anticipated release of the year. If you’ve poked around my blog for even a couple of minutes, you’ll quickly realize I’m obsessed with Brandon Sanderson’s books, particularly those that take place in the cosmere.

Wind and Truth is the fifth installment of the Stormlight Archive series, and a very important book as it ends the first story arc of a ten-book series. Every single book I’ve read in this series has been five stars (bordering on the fabled six stars, in some cases) and I have zero doubts that this book will be just as amazing.

Final Thoughts

Pre-ordering the most anticipated fantasy books of the year is exciting, but it’s also a little bit frustrating because how can you contain your excitement for these books when some of them aren’t out for over a year?

The answer is to distract yourself with other fantastic books that are already out! If you need some book recs, check out my recommendations page here and I just about guarantee your TBR will overfloweth with great fantasy reads!
